MSI GS65 Stealth Thin – GTX 1070 Max-Q Laptop Review
Finally, thin and like gaming laptops that are made for adults you could take them to work and that sort of thing used to be really hard to come by now there’s several are on the market so this is MSI’s offering this is the MSI gs5 stealth thin not to be confused with this still available stealth pro it has a non-gamer leg you’ve got gold accents here and you got the MSI dragon but in a kind of low-key tasteful way you could skin that if you wanted to. I don’t think you would really modern design 4.1 pounds which is one point eight seven kilograms that makes it the lightest among all this competitor in this space and until 8th generation six core 45-watt core i7 – 8750 h CPU inside you’ve got a hundred forty-four hertz IPS class display in here you have your choice of an NVIDIA GTX ten sixty or seventy max-q which we have here now ours came from computer upgrade king chucky USA and this high-end model sells for $24.99 with then there are more affordable versions available obviously the 1060 and this one is really MSI GS65 Stealth Thin review well equipped is 32 gigs of ram in it and a 512 gig NVME SSD that’s quite a lot of machine for the money it’s not an easy one to upgrade though so if you want an upgrade and you’re not really fond of tinkering and you’ll find out in the video what I mean by that if you order from a place like computer upgrade came they can upgrade the RAM in the SSD for you obviously this one already comes with 32 gigs so your saying that it’s maxed we’re going to look at it now know they’re pretty cool I wasn’t aware of them either but it doesn’t cost anything to join and it’s sort of like a crowdsourced version of buying some of the products that you really like only with the tweaks issue also on so what they do is like for example, we have this limited edition Sennheiser pc 37 x headphones.
Right here so they ask people what you would like to see tweaked or changed about a product in the custom order it and so you can join that that order or that drop and get that product if you want we’ve also got their own custom edition of maracas coning I’m a gaming mouse here too so it’s pretty neat stuff again it doesn’t cost you anything to join and they have stuff for keyboard mechanical keyboard enthusiast audio file kind of stuff like these headphones right here a bunch of different categories checks them out now obviously this is an MSI so you can find this at a lot of retailers. That’s probably an advantage first and save the gigabyte arrow 15 X it’s a little bit harder to find it your average retailer anyway, Best Buy also has this one for $2000. Then they make a few compromises I know some of you are wondering what it is to bring that price down it’s still the same 144 Hertz despite any Optronics makes a display I went I checked it believe me instead of killer Wi-Fi they use Intel any Intel Wi-Fi on it’s the 92 60 which is the latest generation Intel card that’s not too bad and they have a satyr 3 SSD instead of a PCIe NVME SSD so now you know it’s different about that Best Buy model and how they got that lower pricing when it comes to the design of MSI GS65 Stealth Thin Specification this thing it’s the smaller footprint version of the stealth pro with an obviously more boardroom friendly corporate friendly look to it I think it’s very nice and it’s very modern looking and so it’s pretty much a flattened rectangle which is the trendy thing these days how did they get it smaller they get rid of the internal hard drive bay so there’s no spinning hard drive here and they got rid of the number pad which some of you will probably like those of you don’t use the number pad that way you get a more spacious traditional keyboard on board this one obviously has a nice matt finish.

It does show fingerprints just like the shiny so black that MSI uses on the regular stealth proline. It’s pretty easy to clean at least as a consolation this is an all-metal laptop so the panel’s even though they have a kind of sandblasted rough finish they’re metal and some people have complained about the creaking or the build quality honestly, it’s pretty darn stiff and this is the price you always pay if you want a thinner and you to want it lighter and this is the lightest of the competitors in this segment it has to come from somewhere so thinner metal panels are it I don’t find it’s flimsy I don’t find it squishy yes on the right side of the palm rest if you squeeze it with intent you can make the little plastic clips inside creak a little bit big deal who cares so oh happy day compared to laptops like the gigabyte arrow and other low bezel display, in fact,t we still have a webcam up top it’s the usual 720p 1 megapixel webcam up there’s nothing special but at least it’s not going to show if your nostrils awesomesauce and when you boot up the machine you’ll notice one of the F keys is lit up. That’s the one that controls of GTX 1070 Max-Q Laptop reivew the webcam so there’s a quick button you just hit that button to enable or disable the webcam for the paranoid among you don’t have to go and put tape over your webcam so among these competitors again the arrow the rogue GM 501 this is actually the lightest laptop which I mentioned you know it’s kind of trivial 1/2 a pound maybe between this and the arrow but when you’re talking about something like the soos rogue GM 501 that’s almost a pound and a half heavier so yeah I got to say if you really want to lighten your load this is the one the display on this is 144 Hertz IPS level display believe it’s VA technology and just this year this is the first time we’re seeing these IPS kind of displays with fast response time so it used to be IPS pounds are really slow for response time so even if you had 144 Hertz you still might see some ghosting not anymore it’s a very nice panel again it’s very close to the Aero panel that only a small model number difference between the two of them and they actually test almost identically the same my personal preference looking at them both well we’re going to have a smackdown between them so you’ll find out but one thing.
Display and Design
I will mention this one is a little bit less bright than the arrow and you can see the metrics on-screen and as always. MSI a has their color calibration utility that comes with the laptop and SRGB is the closest to being accurate for those who want to do content production photo video you get the idea there is it’s actually it’s a fairly decent factory color calibration a little cooler than it should be but that’s almost always the case cause a lot of people prefer that look who aren’t professional content creators I never thought I’d say this about an msi but I really like the trackpad after years of me moaning about their subpar trackpads I like the way it responds it really is pleasant to use it’s it feels sort of Mac like in fact I like the surface texture on it I like the default speed a pinching and zooming all that stuff works fine the only gun not too fond of it’s a buttonless trackpad and the clickers underneath are pretty darn stiff you know that kind of thing where you think you’re going to dislocate your thumb joint okay it’s not quite that bad but I’d like them to be a little less stiff thank goodness you can always tap instead of using the actual clickers as usual msi use SteelSeries keyboards as usual those I really do like GTX 1070 Max-Q Laptop reivew and the tactile feel but damping the actuation force it’s all just really good now when I first tried it out sitting side by side next to the stealth pro not thin this is the thin the pro is the other one the key travel is a little bit shorter and I thought I’d just tolling around with it you know at the store that oh I don’t like this shorter travel not that it’s egregiously short it’s just a little bit shorter this is still by today’s standards an ample travel keyboard I thought I didn’t like it but then when I sat down with it and she worked with it I really like the feel of this keyboard it’s quite good and you’ve got your usual programmable RGB backlighting perky all that sort of thing so yeah you’ve got a light show if you want or you can be all chill with it and just go with white backlighting or whatever you want if you want to bring it into the office and not look gamer like another thing NSI does. It I like is the power button actually changes color to let you know which GPU is in you sometimes is actually useful.
So, you can estimate your battery life and you can learn what programs are making use of your GPU or not so the power buttons above the keyboard thick and it’s white if it’s using internal HD 630 graphics and it turns it kind of amber red if it’s using dedicated graphics it is NVIDIA Optimus switchable graphics there is no G sync here and I’m okay with that because when you have something like a max Q GTX 1070 here and a fast refresh display you’re not going to see a lot of tearing anyway the performance is high enough it’s really for lower and GPUs where it starts to make really a lot of sense to have G sync so I’m chill with it now m/s I’d talked about how there wasn’t a fingerprint scanner embedded in the home buttons I believe there’s some skew that’s going to come out that’s going to have that ours does not have that alright let’s talk about this GTX 1070 Max-Q Laptop reivew some of the important things here with these student light gaming laptops how hot how noisy it doesn’t get as hot on the bottom has certainly this stealth Pro did and the older generations it’s a little less hot on the bottom to touch than the Aero but really counts probably because all of these are really going to be too hot to have to rest against the skin of your legs when you’re gaming is what are the core temperatures like I really suggest gaming on a desk really, I suggest that with any gaming laptop because they do need to breathe anyway the court temperatures on this typically when using the most demanding games again like Far Cry 5 the core is will hit 92 92 centigrade that’s toasty 100 is the max allowable it’s not different.
Its competitors and that respect the GPU typically is around 75 centigrade again that’s that’s much cooler and it’s also typical of his competitors if you do certainly, use the Intel XT or throttle stop and you under voltage even 100 millivolts you can drop about 5-6 degrees on your core temperatures so I would recommend doing that with any of these thin and light gaming laptops also keep in mind this is an NVIDIA max Q design so you can also turn on the option in the GeForce experience to be quieter and cooler what that does is it limit frames to 60 frames per second if you’re playing a shooter, you know if you’re me then you probably don’t want to do that but if you’re playing an RPG like Fallout 4 or The Witcher 3 then 60 frames is perfectly fine and you can do that and you can chill things down one thing I will say though it has several different fan profiles and you can roll your own and you can see the one that I’m using is a custom fan profile when you’re gaming the auto fan profile is on drugs it’s stupid it’s crazy it doesn’t really ramp up the fans enough and that’s part of the reason why those temperatures were going as high as they were make your own custom fan profile if you’re gaming you can just turn on cooler boost which is max fans honest-to-goodness if you’re gaming but today’s most demanding titles it’s probably not a bad idea just max as the fans ax but don’t stick with auto if you’re gaming if you’re doing productivity work even if you’re editing video the auto profile is sufficient speaking of pro apps kind of workers I think MSI GS65 Stealth Thin price amazon a lot of you are actually buying this probably more for that than the gaming maybe even it’s awesome it’s fantastic for premiere pro 4k video editing is a trivial task for it you’re going to like it a lot for that Photoshop and Lightroom much less demanding even then yeah you’re going to like it fine and you won’t hardly hear the fans at all probably with Photoshop II I mean I haven’t heard them period except when I used some very advanced filters and that’s about in with all these 15 points they inch gaming laptops one of the selling points is they have a lot of ports compared to your average competing Ultrabook you have Gigabit Ethernet it’s killer a 2500 on here you’ve got multiple USB type a ports we have a Thunderbolt three full four-lane 40 gigabit per second here you’ve got both HDMI and display port outs HDMI 2.0 instance play port 1.2 on this sub it’s well equipped the only thing that’s missing is an SD card slot which I think is a real oversight here given the fact that I think I’ll get a lot of pro apps people are going to be buying these things.
For content production so you’re going to have to carry here on a USB SD card adapter oh well in terms of the other tech stuff you can see it on screen here the chipset we’re using Ram is a maximum of 32 gigs again which our unit has so that’s 2 Ram slots inside an NVME SSD as standard and there are two slots too so you can have 2 m2 drives the primary boot drivers must be an NVME Drive the second one can be your choice of an NVME or a SATA 3 if you want to save some money and not get super fast drive for your second slot as usual is ESS saber hi-fi audio with separate mic and headphone jack so you can use a splitter or jointer if you need to accommodate something that has a unified plugin connector and they using the hemicube audio which makes sound better it sounds fuller it gets rid of the hisses real kind of sound the bass is good but it does reduce volumes significantly which is unfortunate performance on this you can see the benchmarks on screen just where we would expect them very similar to its competitor is hardly a difference in fact which is to say very good you don’t have to have a giant 17-inch anything anywhere anymore even the 15-inch which is still a tank to get this level of performance which is pretty darn impressive I was rolling well over a hundred frames per second in some of the harder games that are available today on Ultra settings so that is just all sweetness and light so battery life I usually just plain old sucks doesn’t especially on thin unlike gaming laptops the way they got there was by cutting the battery capacity in half not the case here not quite as much battery capacity is 2 gigabyte era but well above average it has an 82 watt hour battery that’s pretty good and thanks to NVIDIA Optimus and switchable graphics you should be able to get 6 to maybe 7 hours of productivity and streaming video sort of use out of this not gaming folks now gaming besides the fact that you play when you’re unplugged with this and really tries to force you into an echo power plan you can override if you want in Dragon Center settings.
But there it is they win the award for the most compact 180-watt adapter which is the appropriate adapter for the CPU and GPU combination it’s by a little bit even smaller than the gigabyte arrows and it’s less of a burden to carry around of course it’s still going to add some weight to your backpack but given the bad fact that battery life is pretty good you might not need to take it depending on how long you’re going to be away from an outlet ok to take the bottom cover off it’s actually pretty easy there’s other than after you unscrew 15 Phillips head screws there’s a lot of screws granted one of them is under this factory steel seal sticker which is always the case with MSI their warranties are different in different countries but here in the United States their rule is you’re still allowed to open this up you won’t void the warranty unless you go ahead and break something to see if you want to upgrade something you can so anyway take the screws off pry the bottom off not too hard it there really is no hear that sound that’s the sound of metal then there’s the underside glorious metal lots of ventilation here lots of ventilation everywhere on this laptop they sure didn’t give us plenty of ventilation so now that we’re inside you can see that we’ve actually got fans with intake and exhaust both sides right here so that’s pretty good actually it’s sucking in from the bottom it should be exhausting from the sides and the rear so yes your mouse hand will get toasty but also it’s venting out towards the rear side again don’t block that bottom mesh because it does need to take air and they do a good job actually with this cover.
I’m putting a rather raised foot on it almost like a little miniature stand to try to aid in ventilation here’s our ample battery over here and pretty good size speaker drivers for a laptop this size again they’re pretty loud as just the macaw do kind of subdued the volume a bit here’s our killer 1550 Wi-Fi card latest generation one killer I like it it’s pretty good stuff and nothing much else to see here is there because just like the msi stealth pro this is your basic upside down motherboard what fun right so if you want to get to the Emma SSD slots and the RAM slots or if you wish to repay stur CPU and GPU you’re going to have to take out the motherboard there are only two screws holding the motherboard in here’s one of them for example right here and the other screw is hiding under this little piece of tape here but you have to undo about six connectors or so many of them are ribbon cables it’s not that bad if you if you’ve tinkered with computers before if you haven’t get it from someplace like computer upgrade King who will do the upgrades for you so these are bayonet style connectors here these ribbon cables so what that means if you’re not familiar is these little black plastic things here I’ll do that one pull up and then you can pull the ribbon cable out so don’t just yank on that cable and don’t yank straight up so that’s how those work those are little bayonet style and to put it back you just clip snaps right back in there again so it’s not super bad if you’re a little bit brave so that’s the MSI GE62 elephant.
